AHEAD OF THE CURVE is the story of one of the most influential women in lesbian history you’ve never heard of and the impact her work continues to have today. Growing up, Franco never saw any representation of queer women–she didn’t even know it was possible for a woman to be gay. When she realized she was a lesbian, it changed the course of her life.
Jen Rainin founded Frankly Speaking Films with Rivkah Beth Medow in 2020 to tell mesmerizing stories about strong queer women. Together, they created the feature documentary AHEAD OF THE CURVE and the Oscar shortlisted short documentary HOLDING MOSES. Jen is a Film Independent fellow whose other credits include HOMEROOM (EP: Hulu), a documentary about Oakland’s education system; TWO SPIRITS (EP: Independent Lens), a documentary about gender identity in Native American cultures; SHIT & CHAMPAGNE (EP: Hulu), a high-camp, drag send-up of the iconic exploitation films of the 1970s. With her wife, Jen co-founded The Curve Foundation to champion LGBTQ+ women’s stories and culture through intergenerational programming and community building. her directorial debut, and the inaugural film for Frankly Speaking Films.
