The Effects of VFX

Film Fatales hosted a conversation about VFX. This panel discussion took place in person at the WGA Library in Los Angeles and was facilitated by Film Fatales members Tchaiko Omawale and Rijaa Nadeem with guest speakers Andrew Thomas Huang (VFX Artist/Director), Yasmin Dunn (Robot Rumpus, VFX producer), and Zander Brocisky (Inhance Digital, VFX Producer). Participants learned about the ins and outs of directing music videos, working with green screens, and setting yourself up for success using special effects.

Panelists

Tchaiko Omawale is an award winning director who grew up as a Global Nomad, a Black Third Culture Kid. Prior to moving to the United States at age 16, she lived in seven different countries while her father worked for UNICEF. Before pursuing narrative filmmaking Tchaiko made several short form projects. Her music videos were featured on Black Dog’s website and her short film Sita inspired by Octavia Butler and Derek Jarmon was exhibited in art spaces such as Project Row House exhibition for Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter. She was chosen by Ava Duvernay to direct an episode for Queen Sugar for Season 4. Tchaiko was awarded the Gaea Sea Change Residency for artists working for social change while working on America’s Shadows( about the socio-economic HIV risk factors for Black and Latino NYC Youth). Tchaiko was a 2017 School of Making Thinking Resident fellow where she created the VR film Shapeshifters.

Rijaa Nadeem is a producer and director whose work has aired on several cable networks across the United States. Her work has also aired internationally in several different countries such as Australia, Italy, France and the United Kingdom. She has produced and directed some of the highest rated series for Reelz network such as “Murder Made me Famous”, “Scandal Made me Famous” and “Price of Fame”. She has been part of several other series on networks such as Discovery, Cooking channel, HGTV and Food Network. Her short film “Piece of Naan” which she wrote and directed has received critical acclaim at several film festivals around the globe such as Cannes short film corner, Kashish Mumbai International film festival, Dallas Video fest, Women Texas film festival and QCinema Fort worth film festival. Rijaa currently works as a producer in an all media agency in Los Angeles and she is in post production for her latest short film called “Meet Him at Noon”

Writer-director Andrew Thomas Huang crafts hybrid fantasy worlds and mythical dreamscapes. A Grammy-nominated music video director, Huang’s collaborators include Bjork, FKA Twigs and Thom Yorke among others. His films have been commissioned by and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, The Sydney Opera House and the Museum of Contemporary Art, LA. Huang also directs for film and TV, including an episode of Terence Nance’s Random Acts of Flyness Season 2 on HBO.

Yasmin M. Dunn brings two decades of experience as a consultant, leadership coach and school administrator to her role as the Hollywood Commission’s Director of Education and Outreach. A graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Dunn most recently worked as a Producer/Partner at Robot Rumpus VFX, where she was responsible for diversifying the workforce by recruiting and developing women and minorities.

Zander Borsiczky is known for Envelope, Larry (2019) and The Morning Show (2019). He brings years of technical know-how and passion to every project. From TV and Film to Social, he’s lead clients and artists through technical pipelines while delivering the highest quality product.
