When her beloved husband’s cancer roars back with a vengeance, a queer, bohemian mother leans on her long-term girlfriend as they celebrate a 50th birthday – two years early. At the weekend retreat with friends and family, grief and resilience, euphoria and despondency, and rivalry and authentic connection co-exist as they integrate the shifting constellation of their family.

Synopsis

Rivkah and Kyle’s sole wedding vow was to never stop growing. Raising two daughters together, they love each other dearly, opening their marriage when Rivkah fell in love with Randi, who is now part of their everyday life. Kyle’s colon cancer has recently come out of remission and is on a frighteningly aggressive path. To manage her grief and her fear, Rivkah throws Kyle a 50th birthday party, even though he just turned 48. With their closest people at a weekend retreat on a secluded California ranch, they cook, stretch, make music, laugh and cry together, as each person’s agenda emerges. From Shabbat dinner on the first night to the birthday party the next evening, time speeds up exponentially for Rivkah, pushing her to her breaking point. She turns to both her lovers in turn to help her hold her pain and accept the changes that none of them have chosen.

Bio

Jen Rainin founded Frankly Speaking Films with Rivkah Beth Medow in 2020 to tell mesmerizing stories about strong queer women. Together, they created the feature documentary AHEAD OF THE CURVE and the Oscar shortlisted short documentary HOLDING MOSES. Jen is a Film Independent fellow whose other credits include HOMEROOM (EP: Hulu), a documentary about Oakland’s education system; TWO SPIRITS (EP: Independent Lens), a documentary about gender identity in Native American cultures; SHIT & CHAMPAGNE (EP: Hulu), a high-camp, drag send-up of the iconic exploitation films of the 1970s. With her wife, Jen co-founded The Curve Foundation to champion LGBTQ+ women’s stories and culture through intergenerational programming and community building. her directorial debut, and the inaugural film for Frankly Speaking Films.
