Synopsis

SEVEN DAYS TO BUTTERFLY is more than just a dramatic comedy about abortion, it is a feminist story about a twenty-something woman coming to terms with the difficult decision to terminate an unwanted pregnancy despite her liberal, pro-choice, Jewish background. Annie’s new Hollywood apartment complex is home to a community of artists and musicians where nightly music “jams” happen in the courtyard. At Annie’s first jam, she meets Mike, a charismatic musician. Despite her liberal, pro-choice, Jewish upbringing being in direct contradiction to his conservative, Christian background, they start dating. Soon, Annie realizes something is missing – her period. She insists this unintended pregnancy is not a big deal, she will have an abortion the next day. Mike is supportive. At her doctor’s appointment, she learns she has to wait one week for her procedure due to medical reasons. Over the next seven days, Annie begins to feel how choosing to have an abortion is a difficult decision, culminating in Annie going to a synagogue to express her anger at God and speaking with the Rabbi who supports her decision of choice. Simultaneously, Mike sinks into his own religious background that abortion is wrong. The next day, Annie goes to her appointment. Mike is there to support. Yet, when she is finished, Mike is nowhere to be found. After two days, Mike tries to convert Annie to his Christian beliefs. She hugs him and tells him to “go with God”, ending their relationship. Fifteen years later, Annie and Mike speak about how life for each of them has gone since they last saw each other. Mike shares that he has started his own church to spread the message of peace and love, inspired by Annie’s courage.
