Synopsis
In the city of Metroplex, square-jawed Captain Justice (known behind his back as Mansplaino) is sure he’s got everything under control — and that you don’t know what he knows. He even kicks off the show by explaining how theme songs work. But his comfortable worldview will soon get rocked by Pam, the newly-arrived small town gal with stars in her eyes, amazing powers, and a limited capacity to put up with bullshit.
And there’s plenty of bullshit to deal with in this old-school universe, like a police commissioner who literally has trouble seeing or hearing women, super-bros like MR. Miscellaneous — a “hero” with heat vision that tops out at 104 degrees, and snarky arch-villain Madame Bleakwood, who’ll try to flip Pam to the dark side. When Pam’s undeniable talents earn her an invitation to join the legendary League of Decency, but only in the humiliating sidekick role of AssistaGirl, it’s clear that she’s got a long road ahead of her.
MANSPLAINO was inspired by our experiences on the film festival circuit with co-creator Dava Whisenant’s debut feature "Bathtubs Over Broadway." Dava was frequently assumed to be the assistant of the film’s star, rather than the director. Co-creator (and former "Letterman" and "Simpsons" writer) Steve Young, the star of Bathtubs, witnessed this happening. We started to joke about it, and the characters of Mansplaino and AssistaGirl were born.
Putting these characters in the testosterone-soaked world of comic book heroes and villains lets us make cathartic comedy out of the everyday frustrations women face. Anyone who’s ever felt underestimated and overlooked will root for Pam as she tries to decide whether to work within the deeply flawed system or blow it up. Also, how often to tell Mansplaino: “Dude. I know that.”
